Sunset Park — Love at First Sight
I first discovered Sunset Park on a taco tour in 2015, too stuffed to finish the last stop at Ricos. Almost a year later I was introduced to Tina when I was looking for a “garage” – somewhere to escape to throw paint around and occasionally get out of the celebrity-packed bustle of Boerum Hill. Tina somehow “got” what I was looking for and directed me down to Sunset Park to check out one of the Finnish co-ops. Adamant I wasn’t interested in putting residential roots down in NYC, I failed to follow her good advice.
A few months later my interest was piqued by a completely derelict apartment in the same building. Beyond the rationale of most, I was almost instantly convinced this was my space to transform. While unlivable, with knocked up walls and floors, there was something about the light, proximity to the park and everything I later continued to reaffirm in the magic of the neighborhood.
