Sunset Park — Love at First Sight

I first discovered Sunset Park on a taco tour in 2015, too stuffed to finish the last stop at Ricos. Almost a year later I was introduced to Tina when I was looking for a “garage” – somewhere to escape to throw paint around and occasionally get out of the celebrity-packed bustle of Boerum Hill. Tina somehow “got” what I was looking for and directed me down to Sunset Park to check out one of the Finnish co-ops. Adamant I wasn’t interested in putting residential roots down in NYC, I failed to follow her good advice.

A few months later my interest was piqued by a completely derelict apartment in the same building. Beyond the rationale of most, I was almost instantly convinced this was my space to transform. While unlivable, with knocked up walls and floors, there was something about the light, proximity to the park and everything I later continued to reaffirm in the magic of the neighborhood.

Building A Dream Escape

Tina introduced me to Radek who reassured me we could make the gut reno work, and I went back to Ricos to finish the tacos and seal the deal.

Growing up between an interior design mother and structural engineer father I wasn’t scared about the renovation project, and after 10 years working in tech, curious whether it would pique enough of an interest to become anything more. Radek and his team at Maiden Brooklyn were amazing collaborators, and the result was a home that kept me more than sane through the next few years of COVID, starting (and selling) a company – with a lot of help and caffeine from Patricia and Herman at Liebra Cafe.

After 10 years loving the apartment and neighborhood, I’m returning to the UK and looking to find a great match for my perfect home.
